PMA-3

PRESSURE-ACTIVATED ANTI-PERSONNEL BLAST MINE

BODY:
Usually green, sometimes black moulded plastic. A black rubber cover is fitted over the top of the mine.

DIMENSIONS:
Diameter 110mm, Height 40mm.

TOTAL WEIGHT:
180g.

EXPLOSIVE DETAILS:
35g Tetryl.

FUZE TYPE AND ACTIVATION:
UPMAH-3 fuze is inserted into the base of the mine from underside. It contains a friction-sensitive chemical compound and a detonator. Activated by 8 to 20kg pressure on any part of the top surface of the mine. Pressure required may be as low as 1kg at the edge of the pressure plate.

SAFETY FEATURES:
A safety collar is positioned around the top of the mine. When fixed it prevents any movement of the pressure plate. A short length of cord is attached to the collar, to allow it to be removed from a distance when the mine is armed.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Non-metalic mine with minimum-metal fuze. PMA-3 has less explosive content than any Jugoslav manufactured mine, but because it is initiated from below, it is sufficient to cause traumatic injuries and possible loss of a foot. It is very difficult to detect with a conventional metal detector, as the only metal content is in the fuze. PMA-3 is very sensitive to manual-prodding search of the ground, they have been found deliberately laid on their side, as a counter against manual-prodding search techniques. One of the four most numerous Anti Personnel mines in Bosnia Herzegovina.
